Discovering Strength also offers a range of group activities for kids that help promote social skills and learning for our current clients. The groups are run by our registered Psychologists with qualified instructors.
Karate for children with Additional NeedsThis is a specialised group that offers an opportunity to learn karate as well as social skills. Operating in conjunction with Shindo Karate, this program is unique in that it provides an opportunity for participants to transition to regular classes when they are ready. Participants are supported by Psychologists while progressing through a Karate curriculum. |
Basketball and cricket for children with additional needsThese individual groups encourage participants to learn how to play cricket and basketball whilst also learning important social skills. These groups teach children important skills such as teamwork and communication, so they are able to comfortably move to regular classes where these skills are valued. These classes are run by qualified instructors and are supported by Psychologists. |
STEM club: Technology GroupOur Technology social skills group has a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Participants will have access to robots, drones, 3D pens and more while they learn social skills. Conducted in a group environment, the Club encourages members to problem solve, practice and learn important social skills, focus on specific tasks, participate in teamwork and regulate their emotions. Participants will also have opportunities to learn basic programming. |
Social Skills GroupsThese fun groups provide kids with the opportunity to develop their social skills while undertaking a range of fun activites such as games, art, craft and more. The groups also help kids to develop friendships, learn about team building, regulate their feelings, work on problem solving, learn new skills and generally have some fun! We offer a Lower Primary Group, Middle/Upper Primary Group and a Community Access Group. Your therapist will help you decide what group is right for your child/teen. |
ScienceThis group looks at the questions of 'Why?' and 'How?' through fun experiments. In this group, children are able to participate in activities both individually and as a group whilst answering their the questions they are most curious about. | Art Group Gives teens a chance to express their creative outlet in the space with other creative like-minded people. This group takes the opportunity to encourage clients to experiment with different mediums such as paint, clay, or even digital devices to create artwork that they are confident to show the world, including in the Discovering Strength house. | Parent/carer support groupOur parent/carer support group brings together carers and parents who experience similar issues. Together, participants are supported by a Psychologist to learn new approaches from each other so that people do not feel so alone on their journey with their children. Topics of discussion are lead by the participants. It is an opportunity to share feelings, insights and make some new friends. |
